„And you want to stop, even at this late stage? At well past the eleventh hour?‟

„It‟s -‟ she struggled to find a way of saying how she felt. „It‟s not right,‟ she said at last. „There has to be another way of doing this. There must be.‟

For a while Bryant said nothing. His face was close to hers as he leaned across the desk. It seemed as if he had stopped breathing.

Then he stood suddenly upright. „Of course,‟ he said switching on a smile, „if you feel like that, then we must call it off.‟

„What?‟ She frowned.

„As you say, there has to be another way. This only works if we are all agreed, all together. If you have doubts, then we must accommodate them, must discuss them. That‟s what we agreed. And we must stand by that.‟

„Thank you.‟ She stood up shakily and walked with him to the door. They shook hands. „I‟m with you entirely about what we‟re trying to achieve, you know that.‟

He was still smiling, as if he had forgotten to stop. „Of course. And I value your input. Now, if you will excuse me, there are people I need to see. Arrangements to un-make.‟

„Of course,‟ she said, the relief evident in her voice.

„Thanks, Jim.‟

It was not often that Jennifer Hamilton got to spend a whole afternoon in her office free from appointments, and she was determined to make the most of it. She told her secretary to hold all but the most urgent calls and made a start.

There was plenty to catch up on, and she quickly put the meeting with Bryant out of her mind and concentrated on her ministerial boxes. She worked steadily and conscientiously.

When she looked up and saw from the clock on the wall that it was nearly four o‟clock, she was surprised at how quickly the time had gone.

She was just starting into the next pile of papers when the phone buzzed. „Yes?‟

Louise‟s voice was clear. „There‟s someone to see you, ma‟am.‟

„I‟m not expecting anyone.‟ Her first thought was that Bryant had returned.

„He says it‟s urgent. His name‟s Commander Sullivan. He‟s with the security services.‟

The Secretary of State for Defence thought for a moment.

Louise would not have called if she wasn‟t convinced that it was indeed urgent. „All right,‟ she said. „Tell him he can have ten minutes, no more.‟

Sullivan was very tall and dark-haired. He shook Hamilton‟s hand and thanked her for seeing him. „I know it‟s not strictly according to protocol,‟ he said, his voice a deep growl, „but it is as you will shortly see extremely important.‟

„Very well.‟ She waved him to the chair in front of the desk, and sat herself down. She put the papers she had been working on back in the box, so that the desk was clear. Then she looked up at the man. „Now what is so important that you couldn‟t go through the usual channels or consult your superiors?‟

There was a strange half-smile on the man‟s face. He reached into his jacket pocket.
